How to Update Your Wardrobe on a Budget by Tess DiNapoli

Everybody deserves new clothes for the season, but revamping your wardrobe can get expensive. You want to impress your friends with cute new looks without emptying your wallet at the same time! Affordable women’s fashions are out there if you’re a savvy shopper who’s great at finding the steal of the day. Learning how to update your wardrobe on a budget is possible if you simply apply some key tricks of the trade.

Choose Pieces That Can Be Layered

Affordable women’s fashion pieces like cardigans, sweaters, blouses, and tank tops, are easy to mix and match with items you already have in your wardrobe. Layering and creating new outfits with different combinations is a great way to utilize what you already have. Investing more in a multi-functional piece like a blazer or a jacket is also often worth spending the extra money if you can wear it several times throughout the week.

Head for Clearance Racks First

If your size is popular, you’ll notice it right away when shopping for affordable women’s fashions, because the cutest patterns and colors always sell out in your size first. When your size is less popular, clearance racks can be chock full of stylish discount clothing that fits you perfectly. Whatever size you are though, it’s worth heading straight to the discounts racks for a quick look at what’s available.

Shop End-of-Season Sales

End-of-season sales can also offer some steep and affordable discounts on women’s fashions. Though you may not get to wear those items for long this year, they’ll be like-new for next year’s season. Choosing items that aren’t overly trendy is key in this instance because you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb with last year’s fads. Instead, look for timeless pieces in classic colors that never go out of style. End-of-season sales can also offer cutbacks on accessories like purses, cute shoes, hair accessories, and even discount luxury watches.

Join Company Email Lists and Follow their Social Media Pages

Retail businesses often offer decent discounts just for joining their email list. For initially signing up, you might even receive 10-20% off your first order, free shipping, or something similar. Once you’ve joined, they also usually send you emails about their new boutique clothing, upcoming sales, and other promotions. Businesses also often post special deals and codes to their social media pages in an effort to grow their online presence. Take advantage of these deals by watching your inbox and browsing your social media feeds.

Brouse Thrift Stores and Consignment Shops

While some thrift stores can be dead ends for the newest styles, others can be pure goldmines. If you live in an urban area, take the time to shop around at the many different options available to you. While there, ask what days they restock their shelves. Shop thrift stores the day after they have restocked so you get the prime choices before they’ve been picked over. Some secondary consignment shops will be a bit pricier, but that’s because they buy more well-known brands in better condition.

Shopping for clothing doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Affordable women’s fashions that fit your budget are available in plain sight if you know where and how to look for them. Update your wardrobe by shopping sales, collecting coupon codes, and shopping at the right stores. If you have fashion-forward friends, you could also suggest a clothes swapping party. Just don’t forget to bring the wine!
